Getting down to the Nitty Gritty

On February 12, 2014 by battenburgbelle

Sunday, being the second Sunday in the month, was Nitty Gritty night at the Constitution in Camden. Very exciting to go out on a school night and dance the night away to great music from DJs Dapper D and Jaybird Slim (https://www.facebook.com/nittygrittyuk). So I couldn’t do a full feast, but didn’t feel it was right to go out and leave the family to forage around in the fridge unsupervised, so burgers it was. I don’t think I have ever made them the same twice. This time I mixed minced beef with a finely chopped onion, a bit of Dijon mustard, some grated parmesan, in theory some chopped flat leaf parsley, although I actually forgot to put that in, and a pinch or two of fennel pollen. I bought this for another recipe that I haven’t got around to doing yet, so I thought I’d pop some in these (it wasn’t cheap, got to use it). It was subtle, but I’m sure it added to the general deliciousness. The burgers went down very well with the Battenburgs, and not just because they knew that otherwise they’d have been fending for themselves.

Burger in a brioche bun

Quick dinner before dancing the night away

Missy B chose a slice of plastic cheese (eek) and some baby tomatoes. The grown-ups had proper strong cheddar, griddled red onion and tomatoes, a bit of mayonnaise, some beetroot relish and the last of the tomato chutney (trying to clear a few jars out of the fridge…). We had them with brioche buns – it seems strange to have your burger in a sweet(ish) bun, but it really works. Another happy Bertinet moment.

And for reasons that will become apparent in a future post, I had to practice my cupcakes, so those who weren’t off out dancing had one of these for dessert.

Cupcakes, version 1

Sexy cup cakes

I made far too many for a small family, so sent Mr B’s football companion home with some and I was delighted to receive this message later: “Thank you for those sexy cupcakes – they were sheer perfection”. There will be more. I have to get them right every time…
